For over a decade, the Rotary Club of New Canaan has supported the International Mine Clearing efforts of the HALO Trust.  On July 20, 2017, the club welcomed the HALO Trust's United States Executive Director, Adam Jasinski, to our meeting.
Adam joined the HALO Trust in 2008, and since then has worked on operations in Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Myanmar, Georgia, Afghanistan and Mozambique, most recently setting up HALO demining operations in Eastern Ukraine. Before joining HALO, Adam worked as a journalist at the British Broadcasting Corporation. He studied at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London and Tbilisi State University. In 2016, he took up post as Executive Director of HALO USA.
Earlier this year, at HALO's 20th Anniversary Celebration at Kensington Palace in the UK, the Trust announced the LANDMINE FREE 2025 Campaign and set the ambitious goal of ridding the globe of all known land mines.  Prince Harry delivered the keynote address honoring his mother, Princess Diana, who was an early supporter of the HALO Trust:

Rotary International Youth Exchange....

The Rotary Club of New Canaan is proud to revive a longstanding tradition of International Youth Exchange in our effort to promote World Peace and Understanding.

Please join us in congratulating Alvaro Riquelme from Linares, Chile, who has just successfully completed his Junior Year at New Canaan High School for the 2016/2017 academic year.  Alvaro played soccer for the Rams and participated in many other activities.  During the school year, Alvaro stayed with three different local host families, beginning with our club's own Ben and Betsy Bilus.  Hosting an international exchange student is a wonderful way to expand your family's horizons and create a life-long relationship.  If you or anyone you know is interested in potentially hosting a student, please contact Alex Grantcharov at

Later this summer we will be welcoming our next international exchange student from Germany for the 2017/2018 Academic Year.

During the 2015/2016 Rotary Year, our club sponsored outgoing International Exchange Students and hosted Incoming International Exchange Students.  Here are just a few photos highlighting this wonderful experience.  Special thanks to club members Anne Cheney, Alex Grantcharov and Cynthia Gorey for their work leading this effort!

Earlier this year the New Canaan Rotary Club received a Rotary District Matching Grant for an International Service Project to help restore Marine life off the Coast of Bantayan Island in the Philippines through the work of the Young Pioneer Disaster Relief organization.  Check out this video showing the effects of the first underwater 'Marine Domes' set in place to accelerate the growth of new reefs and to provide a protected home for vulnerable marine wildlife.
